Donald Zinkoff wanted to stand out and be loved by everyone. Even if he wasn't popular and even if he had some enemies, he never noticed that. He always thought everyone liked him and he was friends with everyone, even the big kid that bullied him one time during 2nd grade. He kept losing the races even if his team gave him a huge head start. This is why people started calling him loser. So, he made friends with this little girl named Claudia and one night towards the end of the book, she got lost and no one could find her, so he saw police cars and fireman and such, but he thought they still couldn't find Claudia. He then went out 2 miles away from home, searching, and searching and searching. He passed out because of the cold and woke up in a hospital bed surrounded by his family. He asked his family about Claudia but his family told him that the police were looking for him. Not Claudia. Then, he became popular because people is his small town knew about what he had done and the name loser wasn't really there for him anymore.
