This is a novel set in Switzerland in the middle ages. It tells the story of a group of children who were sold to the Hospitalers and have returned to Switzerland after 20 plus years of serving in Outreamer. Story mostly focuses on Thomas, the captain of the group. He decides to lay down his life as a soldier and live simply. Two of his comrades, Pimrin and Gessler choose different paths, but their stories continually intersect throughout the novel. Along side the story of these three Brother-Sargeants of the Hospitalers is the story of the Habsburgs and their rule over Switzerland. The people of the Canton don't want the Austrians there and a group is fighting against them. Pimrin joins the group and tries to get Thomas to join as well. Gessler ends up working for the Duke of Styria.
